Gundaroo Village
Gundaroo is a small historic village located about 35 km from Canberra in Gunning Shire. The village has been the subject of a number of studies and publications including a report by the National Trust of Australia. Gundaroo is an important example of a typical 19th century Australian village and has become a significant tourist attraction for the area. Similarly its unique character has attracted many new residents in recent years. Gundaroo is special because it does not have the urban sprawl which is associated with other small towns within commuting distance of Canberra.
Most of the older buildings were constructed in the period 1860-1890 and are generally in good condition. There is a range of building styles and materials including slab huts, wattle and daub, stone and locally fired brick.
There are now several newer buildings scattered throughout the village many of which complement the historic character of the township. There are also pleasing open spaces and a town common bordering the village on the eastern side. The common is one of the few remaining functioning town commons in existence and provides an area for villagers to graze cattle.
The Gundaroo Library and Literary Institute
A dressed weather-board cottage on the eastern side of Cork Street opposite the Caledonia Store, it was built in 1888. It was donated by William Affleck in 1897 to the village Mutual Improvement Society (which he himself founded) for a Library. It has recently been restored by the trustees.
Sally Paskins' Store
This slab hut with brick chimney is between St Mark's Church and the Gundaroo Store and was built in 1886. Sarah ('Sally') Paskins was a interesting figure who kept a cockatoo on the counter in the shop. She died in 1892 and the shop was taken over by William Affleck. The building is in very good condition, the shingle roof having been covered with iron at some stage.
The Gundaroo Store
Adjacent to Sally Paskins' Store, this building was originally called the Gundaroo Arcade. It was built by Thomas Coleman in 1893 and has a small brick cottage attached on the northern side.
